Overview

Join the State of Vermont’s Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS) as an Institutional Custodian!

 

This position will be responsible for custodial and light maintenance work at the Vermont Psychiatric Care Hospital (VPCH), ensuring a clean, safe, and secure environment for patients and staff.

 

Duties include cleaning patient rooms, bathrooms, offices, and common areas; stripping and waxing floors; spot-cleaning carpets; operating floorcare equipment; maintaining inventory and requesting supplies; and reporting repair needs. The Custodian may also assist with training others on cleaning methods and equipment use.

 

This position requires a valid driver’s license and successful completion of a background check. Work schedule to be determined.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a hospital or rehabilitation environment, including office, classroom, and patient care settings. Direct interaction with patients or residents may be extensive, leading to potential exposure to infectious disease or physical injury. Duties may, at times, extend beyond the normal daytime and work week hours. Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather. Good physical condition and ability to climb ladders and lift heavy weights and equipment (up to 60 lbs.) is necessary. Some overtime may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more experience of building custodial work that included floor maintenance tasks such as stripping and waxing floors and carpet extraction.

OR

Two (2) years as a BGS Custodian II. 

Special Requirements

Some positions in this class require a valid driver’s license and own transportation for travel between work locations. 

Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
