Inspection, fire prevention, plans review, investigation and training work in an assigned region for the Department of Public Safety. Duties include recognizing fire hazard, developing solution to problem and ensuring hazard is abated. Work is performed under the supervision of a Fire Prevention Regional Manager.

PUBLIC SAFETY BACKGROUND CHECKS: Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position to include Motor Vehicle/Criminal Records, Personal History, Credit and any additional background check(s).

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in both standard office and field settings. Class incumbents may encounter a wide range of physical conditions while inspecting buildings or construction sites. Considerable travel is required for which private means of transportation be available. Strong and differing opinions will be encountered on a regular basis. Emergencies may require work outside of normal work schedule. Field duties may require work in contaminated environments which may require protective clothing and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in fire protection or fire science, engineering, architecture, electronics, environmental safety, industrial health, physical science or closely related field AND EITHER three (3) years or more at or above a technical level in the areas of fire, electrical, boiler, or plumbing inspection OR five (5) years or more of technical level experience in engineering or buildings trade.


High School diploma or equivalent AND EITHER five (5) years or more at or above a technical level in the areas of fire, electrical, boiler, or plumbing inspection OR seven (7) years or more of technical level experience in engineering or buildings trade.


Certification as a fire inspector from the National Fire Protection Association.
