As the Construction Paving Engineer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and efficiency of paving projects across Vermont. You will provide expert guidance to Resident Engineers and Inspection Staff, review plans and specifications, identify training needs, and actively participate in committees and special assignments. This is an opportunity to leverage your technical knowledge and field experience to make a tangible difference in the state's transportation network and have a positive impact on the lives of the traveling public.


Responsibilities include:

  • Safety First: Uphold the highest standards of safety, civility, and customer service, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Field Support: Provide timely and accurate technical advice to field personnel on paving materials, construction techniques, plans, specifications, and design.
  • Constructability Review: Analyze project plans and specifications, ensuring they align with best practices and constructability.
  • Training & Development: Identify training needs for field personnel and recommend or conduct training sessions on construction procedures, protocols, and best practices.
  • Committee Participation: Actively contribute your expertise to technical committees like the TechPave Performance Working Group, AOT Standard Specifications for Construction Committee, and others.
  • Special Assignments: Take on additional tasks assigned by the Construction Services Engineer or committee chairs.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in an office, laboratory, and field setting for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Class incumbents may be required to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough, wooded, or steep terrain, travel in boats or work on structures above ground level. Duties may also require exposure to extreme weather conditions. Attendance at public meetings as an agency representative where strong adversarial opinions may be encountered. Some public speaking may be needed. Out of state travel may be required. Overtime needs are predictable.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering technology, environmental technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, construction management, or related technical field AND six (6) years of experience performing engineering support tasks involved in one or more of the following: planning, surveying, design, inspection, construction, research and statistics, testing, investigation, maintenance or construction of various types of civil engineering projects.

OR

Associate degree in civil engineering, environmental technology, engineering technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture or related field AND eight (8) years of experience as described above.

OR

High School diploma or equivalent AND ten (10) years of experience as described above.

OR

Two (2) years or more of experience as an AOT Technician V with the State of Vermont.
 

Special Requirements

Some positions in this job class may require possession of a valid driver’s license.
