Overview

Is working 9 to 5 in an office setting not your dream? Do you desire the freedom afforded to those fortunate individuals whose office resides outside? If so, this position could be right for you! The Agency of Transportation has an exciting opportunity in the field of construction oversight and is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated candidate for a Field Construction Technician position. This is a standard 40-hour-a-week position, but may require working contractor hours, which may include some nights and weekends with overtime available. This is an engineering position within the Construction Section where we provide inspection and oversight services on heavy highway construction projects, including roadway, bridge, and railroad, with the occasional rock blasting, rail trail, or even a covered bridge project.

 

The selected candidate for this position will be assigned to a construction project to learn about some of the following during the construction season:  

  • Acting as an inspector by observing, verifying, measuring, documenting the work performed by Contractors, and making payments for acceptable work.
  • Interpreting the plans and specifications that relate to the project.
  • Construction materials sampling and testing.
  • Reviewing and checking project records and documentation.
  • Setting up and operating survey equipment, tabulating data, and performing calculations in the field.

 

The career path for this position is linear, with the first step becoming a proficient inspector. Then, an office engineer and chief inspector roles are next, and subsequently followed by becoming a Resident Engineer, who oversees and manages the Contract daily to ensure compliance with construction processes and materials to be incorporated into the project. If gaining design experience is a must, The Agency of Transportation does offer rotational positions that allow for construction during the construction season and the ability to gain design experience in the construction "off-season". At the Agency of Transportation's Construction Section, you are not applying for a job, but rather deciding upon a lifestyle.

 

Construction Inspectors and Resident Engineers are exposed to a wide variety of construction projects ranging from paving, roadway, and bridge construction, to railroad work, rock slope stabilization, and even the occasional covered bridge restoration. While gaining valuable experience actively inspecting and documenting all aspects of transportation projects, you will have an opportunity to collaborate with designers, contractors, state and local officials, and subject matter experts from all disciplines of engineering and construction. You will assist in the inspection of a specific project or multiple projects under the direction of a Chief Inspector or Resident Engineer. The work can be challenging and yet very rewarding with abundant opportunities, including the potential for design experience, as you advance your career and grow professionally. Successful candidates will have an opportunity to work on a variety of tasks of differing complexities, both independently and in team environments.

 

The official workstation is Construction Headquarters in Berlin, but you will report directly to projects when they are active. This position is regional, so even though the official workstation is in Berlin, there are opportunities to report elsewhere in the off-season with your teammates. These include, but are not limited to, the regional offices in Colchester, Mendon, White River Junction, or St. Johnsbury. There is potential for telework in the off-season as well.

 

Although the full salary range for this position is provided, new hires are typically made at the salary range minimum.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in an office, laboratory, and field setting for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Incumbents may be required to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough, wooded, and steep terrain, travel in boats or work on structures above ground level. Duties may also require exposure to extreme weather conditions. Attendance at public meetings as an agency representative may be required. Some public speaking may be needed. May encounter hostile attitudes on the part of contractors, property owners, and the general public. Incumbents should possess private means of transportation. Out of state travel may be required. Overtime needs are predictable.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering technology, environmental technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, construction management, or related technical field AND four (4) years of experience performing engineering support tasks involved in one or more of the following: planning, surveying, design, inspection, construction, research and statistics, testing, investigation, maintenance or construction of various types of civil engineering projects.

OR

Associate degree in civil engineering, environmental technology, engineering technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, or related field AND six (6) years of experience as described above.

OR

High School diploma or equivalent AND eight (8) years of experience as described above.

OR

Two (2) years or more of experience as an AOT Technician IV with the State of Vermont.

Some positions in this job class may require possession of a valid driver’s license.
