Overview

This position manages all aspects of the Bennington Fish Culture Station, located in Bennington, Vermont. The facility operates on stream surface waters and produces approximately 80,000 pounds of coldwater fish annually for stocking into Vermont public waters. This facility rears yearling brown, brook, and rainbow trout, as well as larger two-year-old brown and rainbow "trophy trout" for stocking public waters throughout Vermont.

 

This position is responsible for the oversight of all facility operations, administration, meeting regulatory requirements, fish production objectives, fish health and biosecurity needs, and public outreach. This position is also responsible for the personnel supervision of three permanent employees. 

 

This successful applicant would be required to live in on-site housing. Weekend assignments can be expected, as well as occasional holiday coverage. The successful applicant would be expected to provide emergency off-hours coverage and be compensated through a 20% guaranteed overtime payment provision. Additionally, the successful applicant must obtain a pesticide applicator's license and CPR certification within six months of hire.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed primarily at a fish culture station both indoors and outdoors in all seasons, but with some travel for stocking or other fish transport purposes. A valid Vermont driver's license is required. An incumbent may be the only employee on duty for certain shifts and must be on call at all times for emergencies, employee absences, or other reasons. Significant physical labor is involved in the performance of fish culture and related duties under varying climatic conditions. A person in this position may be required to live in Department provided housing.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in fish culture, or a natural resources field and two (2) years or more experience in the propagation and culture of food or game fish AND one (1) one year or more of supervisory experience.

OR

Bachelor’s degree in fish culture, or a natural resources field and four (4) years or more of experience in the propagation and culture of food or game fish AND one (1) year or more of supervisory experience.

OR

Five (5) years or more experience in the propagation and culture of food or game fish AND one (1) year or more of supervisory experience.

OR

One (1) year as a Fish Culture Specialist IV for the State of Vermont.

Special Requirements

A person in this position would be required to live in Department provided housing when housing is available.

Must obtain a pesticide applicators license and CPR certification within six month of hire.
