Overview
The Parks Regional Manager is one of the most exciting, and dynamic positions in the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. It is responsible for general oversight and management of the Northeast Region of Vermont State Parks. This position requires excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship building skills. It also requires significant knowledge and understanding of recreation management, capital improvement planning, day-to-day park operations and maintenance and facility management. The Parks Regional Manager is part of an interdisciplinary team across departments and divisions within the Agency of Natural Resources that is responsible for developing long range management plans and making management decisions related to the stewardship of agency lands. The Parks Regional Manager works with a statewide management team to develop, coordinate and implement policies affecting state parks. The Parks Regional Manager is responsible for various regional budgets, making significant capital improvement decisions for projects that can exceed $1 million in budget and scope. The Parks Regional Manager directly supervises 3 staff persons including two Regional Operations Managers and one Regional Facilities Manager. The position also indirectly supervises and supports 6 other full-time regional positions and approximately 100 seasonal staff. It must coordinate with internal and external stakeholders on issues related to park properties. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively within the region and state, facilitate meetings, travel on a weekly basis, and conduct public meetings, including significant public speaking engagements, and contact with the media and press. This position oversees visitor relations and customer service in the region, investigating and responding to visitor disputes and complaints as necessary. The Regional Manager helps make our state a better place to live, and has a vital role in contributing to the health and wellbeing of park visitors.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives of recreation and parks planning, development, management and administration
Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in the maintenance and operation of a State Park
Knowledge of natural resource conservation principles and practices
Knowledge of supervisory and management principles, methods and techniques
Working knowledge of landscaping methods and techniques
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
Ability to plan, assign, supervise, and review the work of subordinates
Skill in working with Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Skill in working in team settings

Environmental Factors
Work is performed in office and field settings. Incumbents must possess a valid driver's license and have access to some means of private transportation. Some evening or overtime work may be required. Complaints from potential and actual park clients may occur which require appropriate communication skills such as sensitivity and diplomacy in achieving resolution.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree AND four (4) years or more of experience in management, administration, planning, maintenance administration or coordination, including one (1) year of supervisory experience.
OR
Two years of full-time college work OR an associate's degree AND six (6) years or more of experience in management, administration, planning, maintenance administration or coordination, including one (1) year of supervisory experience.
