Overview
The AOT Technician within the Structures/Hydraulics Section at the Vermont Agency of Transportation is primarily responsible for the development and design of project plans, specifications, and estimates for projects that focus on bridges/culverts/retaining walls and much more across the state. Additionally, the Hydraulics Team provides hydraulic study recommendations to VTrans Districts and Towns for culvert and bridge crossings in flood damaged areas and for deteriorated structures.
The ideal candidate for this position should have an interest in hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, fieldwork, culvert and bridge hydraulic modeling, and aquatic organism passage (AOP). Additionally, the candidate should have the ability to work on multiple projects at a given time and have strong listening and communication skills. A primary focus area for this position is field work during the summer construction season (approximately early-April through mid-Nov.) on VT State Routes and Town Highways.
This position will be located in Barre City Place in Barre, VT with an opportunity to telework.

Environmental Factors
Duties are generally performed in an office, laboratory, and field setting for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Class incumbents may be required to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough, wooded, and steep terrain, travel in boats or work on structures above ground level. Duties may also require exposure to extreme weather conditions. Out of state travel may be required.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering technology, environmental technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, construction management, or related technical field AND one (1) year of experience performing engineering support tasks involved in one or more of the following: planning, surveying, design, inspection, construction, research and statistics, testing, investigation, maintenance or construction of various types of civil engineering projects.
OR
Associate degree in civil engineering, environmental technology, engineering technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, or related field AND three (3) years of experience as described above.
OR
High school graduation or equivalent AND five (5) years of experience as described above.
OR
One (1) year as an AOT Technician II with the State of Vermont.

Some positions in this job class may require possession of a valid driver’s license.
