Hiring Freeze FAQs

Currently, the State of Vermont is in a hiring freeze for certain positions.

What does this mean?

Only positions, or job vacancies, that had been specifically approved to be filled can be hired.

Can I still apply for and be interviewed for jobs that are posted on the website?

Yes. If the position is still posted, it either has been approved to be filled or is pending a decision on approval. You can apply and your application will be reviewed to determine your eligibility as normal. It will be at the discretion of the hiring manager to decide if they want to conduct interviews for those positions pending approval.

I interviewed for a job, but I have not heard back from the hiring manager on status, and the position is not posted, how do I know if the position is approved to fill or not?

For the fastest response, please email dhr.recruitment@vermont.gov to inquire. Please provide as many specifics as possible (Your name on application, the job title you applied to, Job Requisition Number.) You can find all this information by logging into your account at careers.vermont.gov and opening the “Jobs Applied” section of your profile. The more information you can provide, the faster we can respond. Alternatively, you can call us at 802-828-6700 or 855-828-6700, Option 1, then Option 4.

I was sent an email from you stating I was a finalist for a position and asking to update my application, will I still be eligible to be hired?

If you received the email from us asking to update your application on or before April 16, 2020, for any position, your application will proceed forward conditional upon satisfactory pre-employment checks, etc. After April 16, 2020, only positions that have been approved to fill will be allowed to proceed.
