Overview

As a telephone system administrator, your job will involve setting up extensions and voice mail, training users on how to access and use the system's features, and programming the system. You'll also monitor usage, update equipment, and manage repairs. If users have problems, you may be the one to provide assistance. When repairs or updates are made, you'll keep records and document the completed work.

Your work with include working with phone service providers and equipment vendors on pricing and billing issues, setting up new telco service, and buying new equipment. The administrator also maintains the directory database of user names and extension numbers. Administrators may be responsible for overseeing work done by others within the telephone network and direct them in activities like maintenance. The administrator may also be tasked with analyzing trends of users to help optimize infrastructure and revise guidelines, instructions, policies, and more related to telephony.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in a standard office setting, but some fieldwork is required. Some evening and weekend work is required as well as the possibility of being on-call.  Meetings with various public and private entities with possible conflicting opinions may be anticipated.  Some pressure from deadlines may be present. 

Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree in a technology field AND a minimum of one (1) year experience in the design, installation, planning or maintenance of private telephone systems.

OR

1 year of college coursework in a technology field AND a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in the design, installation, planning or maintenance of private telephone systems.

OR 

High School Diploma or equivalent AND a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the design, installation, planning or maintenance of private telephone systems.
 

Special Requirements

PUBLIC SAFETY BACKGROUND CHECKS: Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position to include fingerprint supported Criminal Records, Motor Vehicle records, Personal History, Credit and any additional background check(s).
