The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is searching for a motivated and service-minded self-starter to support the work of the Commissioner's Office. This is a rare opportunity to be a part of an organization currently engaged in change and strategic planning to improve services and programs to protect and preserve the environment. Department priorities include protecting surface waters, like Lake Champlain, across Vermont, ensuring consistent, convenient recycling services statewide, improving flood resilience and mitigating air and climate pollution. 

Job Responsibilities

As Executive Assistant to the Commissioner this position will:


  • Provide high-level administrative support by handling information requests, preparing correspondence and scheduling meetings and appointments.
  • Provide clerical support for the Deputy Commissioner.
  • Act as the initial contact for legislative scheduling and bill tracking in coordination with the DEC legislative liaison. 
  • Track requests and resolve constituent concerns generated from various sources. 
  • Create and proof documents and manage the flow of documents to minimize delays in approval or review. 
  • Prepare and maintain official records and reports of moderate to difficult complexity.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations in the Commissioner's Office, including travel arrangements and event planning. 
  • Serve as the DEC Lead Records Liaison and coordinate records requests with assigned DEC Division Record Liaisons. 
  • Help lead work with the DEC Records Manager and Vermont State Archives and Record administration to maintain DEC record schedule procedures. 
  • Maintain selected website content for the Department.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Necessary Skills

This position requires a thorough working knowledge of and ability to use standard computer technology and software applications, including MS Office applications, especially Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint and the ability to do online research. The successful candidate will be: 


  • Organized and able to juggle many competing responsibilities and deadlines.
  • Have excellent oral and written skills.
  • Enjoy working with people and have excellent customer service skills.
  • Display an eagerness to learn.
  • Be able to exercise solid judgement and discretion to appropriately handle confidential information and have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
