Administrative and advanced secretarial work for the Office of the Defender General. Must be able to work well independently and as part of a legal team. Position requires patience, the ability to work with a wide variety of people, tenacity, a sense of humor, and a can-do attitude. Experience as a secretary in the criminal or juvenile justice system or human services field preferred.


Primary secretary for the Office of the Juvenile Defender and management staff, and backup secretary as needed in the Prisoners’ Rights Office and Appellate Division. Works on a monthly basis with DCF to schedule case plan review meetings for juveniles in State custody. Types, and may draft routine, legal documents. Types correspondence to and handles telephone calls from clients, the public and officials. Supervises and assists with the screening and sorting of mail and telephone calls. Exercises considerable judgment in referring callers to others when appropriate. Handles confidential background checks in cases as requested by staff and contract defense attorneys across Vermont. Performs entry of caseload data in database program. Handles sorting and distribution of books to public defense offices. Performs related work as required.


$17.11/hour   Pay Grade 17

Minimum Requirements

Associate degree in business technology, secretarial science or office management; OR high school graduation or equivalent and three years of office clerical experience, which included typing, word processing or other generation of documents. Completion of a one-year vocational/technical training program in business and office occupations or related area may be substituted for one year of the work experience. College coursework may be substituted for up to one year of the work experience on a semester for six months basis. Experience as a secretary in the criminal or juvenile justice system or human services field preferred.
